San Francisco Giants' Ryan Vogelsong begins rehab assignment Friday

It’s been a horrible year for the San Francisco Giants overall in their starting rotation. They soon might have some relief with Ryan Vogelsong returning soon, but the question being asked is who will be pulled after Vogelsong’s replacement has shined?

Rotoworld reports that Vogelsong will begin his rehab with Single-A San Jose on Friday night after getting cleared.

Vogelsong was cleared after getting through a simulated game on Tuesday with no issues. The right-hander is expected to make at least a couple rehab start before hopefully rejoining the Giants’ rotation on August 9. He’s been on the shelf since mid-May with a fractured right hand.

The right-hander wasn’t having a particularly good season when he went down. He was 2-4 with a 7.19 ERA, but was having himself a good outing against the Washington Nationals giving up three hits and no runs through five innings before getting hit by a pitch.

Chad Gaudin, who came up after Mike Kickham didn’t pan out in one replacement start, has been phenomenal. He’s 4-1 overall (undefeated as a starter) with a 2.15 ERA.

With players like Matt Cain, Tim Lincecum, and Barry Zito all having inconsistent seasons, could one of those starters be pulled once Vogelsong gets healthy?
