Andre Drummond is among the talented crop of big men that are currently working out at the USA minicamp. While some NBA superstars (Kevin Durant, Kevin Love) have already said that they want to represent their country at the FIBA 2014 World Cup, the team will obviously have a lot of open roster spots, especially for skilled big men. USA basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo likes the potential, but admitted that Drummond and the other youngsters need more experience.
“All the big men here, and I’m generalizing, need more experience. They need games,” Colangelo said. “We’re going to be watching all of them this season.”
“Take Drummond,” Colangelo said. “He’s 19 years old. I can build a case for saying, ‘I would never throw him out of the mix.’ I would rather say, ‘I’d like to keep working with him and bring him along.’ Who knows what he’s going to be like three, four years from now?”
Drummond is still very raw but a lot of fans and executives around the league agree that he has a lot of upside. He looked like a grown man among boys in Summer League and his athleticism is off the charts. There are probably several big men that are ahead in line in terms of making Team USA, but Drummond certainly has a bright future.
