Earlier today it was reported that a Philadelphia Phillies insider felt that Chase Utley and the Phillies were working on a contract extension. There was no hard proof as it was reported on more of a ‘hunch’, but there were some breadcrumbs as to a deal potentially being worked on.
Now according to Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro, he does not expect to trade the long tenured second baseman.
Per Todd Zolecki:
Amaro also said he expects Chase Utley to be with the Phillies past next Wednesday’s 4 p.m. trade deadline.
The Phillies currently feel they’re in position to make a postseason run which would make any Utley trade pointless. Of course, the Phillies are currently sitting three games under .500 and are 7.5 games back of the division leading Atlanta Braves.
A Wild Card birth might even be more difficult for Philadelphia as they are 8.5 games behind the Cincinnati Reds who currently hold the second Wild Card spot.
Either way, it appears Chase Utley will be staying in the City of Brotherly Love.
