Joe Mauer will take time off over the weekend to be with his wife and newborn children after being placed on the paternity list on Wednesday.
The catcher didn’t make the trip with the Twins as they began a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. His wife gave birth to twin girls on Tuesday night, which is interesting irony.
According to the Associated Press report, Mauer will have to be moved to the restricted list because he will exhaust his limited time on the paternity list.
The paternity list is for a maximum of three days, so Mauer will be placed on the restricted list Saturday, assistant general manager Rob Antony said Friday night. Mauer is expected to rejoin the Twins for the start of their next series at home against Kansas City on Tuesday.
Twins manager Ron Gardenhire is “behind [Mauer] 100 percent” on the decision.
Mauer is currently hitting a .324 batting average this season, hitting eight home runs and has 34 RBIs. He’s been very effective at the plate since July 9th, getting at least one hit in every game except the 21st.
