Michael Phelps, the owner of 18 Olympic gold medals and 26 world championship victories, is one of the most celebrated, gifted, and dominant athletes of his generation…
So of course he’d fracture his foot playing golf.
Phelps showed up at the swimming world championships currently being held in Barcelona with a large boot-cast on his right ankle/foot. The 28-year-old swimmer said the injury was “just a fracture, nothing bad; we’re being very cautious right now” and then joked that “it is true you can get hurt on the golf course” (from fina.org via Reuters). Phelps would not elaborate how he sustained the injury, though.
The swimming phenom also talked about the oddness of watching the championships from the sidelines:
It’s kind of weird being on this side of everything. It is a little strange to be out and about in public and dressed up but I am excited to be able to watch some of the swimming this week and not be I guess as nervous.
This is going to be my first meet seeing people swim since I retired so it’s going to be very different and I’m not sure how I’m going to react but I’m looking forward to it
We’re not sure how Phelps will be spending his newly found free time, be we imagine he’ll be inhaling huge amounts of sticky, green, and dank Subway sandwiches.
