A few days ago it was reported that the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago White Sox were in heavy trade discussions for starter Jake Peavy, which would have also netted the Cardinals shortstop Alexei Ramirez.

Those trade talks seemed to die down and now it’s being reported that there are no discussions taking place between the two teams despite the deadline being a day away.

Per Ken Rosenthal:

Sources: No current discussions between #STLCards and #WhiteSox on Peavy.

While Peavy (and Ramirez) made sense for the Cardinals, the reported asking price did not.

The initial reports suggested that the White Sox were demanding top pitching prospect Carlos Martinez in exchange for Peavy, a price any team would deem too costly for a talented though aging starter with a hefty contract.

A better, more cost effective return may be somebody like the Houston Astros Erik Bedard, who, while not as talented as Peavy could produce similar results at a much reduced price – both in terms of actual dollars and prospects sent out.
