Lance Berkman meeting with Texas Rangers about retirement

It’s something no player ever wants to do, but it appears long time Houston Astro and St. Louis Cardinal first baseman Lance Berkman could be hanging them up today – possibly as soon as this afternoon.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports says that Berkman is scheduled to meet with the Texas Rangers front office today and is apparently willing to forfeit nearly $4.5 million dollars so he can retire:

Sources: #Rangers’ Berkman considering retiring and forfeiting remainder of his salary, about $4.4M. Meeting with team officials today.

It’s a classy move from Berkman, assuming retirement talk and a return of his salary is what will take place in the meeting. Berkman could have sat on the end of the bench, hurting, collecting a paycheck. Instead, it appears he wants to free up the money for the Rangers. Of course, in a perfect world, the Rangers would have received word from Berkman a few days ago so they could have implemented the additional cash flow into their trade deadline thinking but it’s still a world class move from Berkman despite the poor timing.
