Inter-division trades are somewhat infrequent so a potential trade between the Arizona Diamondbacks and San Diego Padres seems a bit weird.
Despite that, there are multiple sources suggesting that the Diamondbacks are nearing a trade that will send Ian Kennedy across state lines to the San Diego Padres.
Per Jon Heyman:
#padres getting closer to deal for ian kennedy. #angels had been hoping to get him, as well.
Per Jeff Passan:
There are legs to Ian Kennedy-to-Padres rumors, as reported by
@ScottMCBS. Joe Thatcher would be one of the players going to Arizona.
Kennedy has been nothing short of woeful for the D’Backs this year and last year, but was absolute money in 2011. Fearing the regression, it appears Arizona is open to moving the starter for bullpen help.
The Diamondback’s bullpen has been among the worst in the Major’s this year and Thatcher would solidify some of their late inning troubles.
It’s unlikely Thatcher would take over the closing duties for Arizona, who has a multitude of blown saves, but as a seventh or eight inning arm, Thatcher would provide solid relief.
