The Philadelphia Phillies are ‘open for business’ when it comes to making moves during today’s Major League Baseball trading deadline, however, they appear uninterested in trading any of the parts rival teams are showing interest in.
It was reported earlier today that the Phillies and second baseman Chase Utley are working on a contract extension, taking that trade chip off the block. Now, in addition to Utley not being moved, according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden, starting pitcher Cliff Lee will remain with the Phillies as well.
Cliff Lee is not getting traded today according to
While I wouldn’t say Lee has garnered heavy interest (simply because of his absurd contract), a few teams (namely the Boston Red Sox) have shown strong interest in Lee but refuse to part with the prospects AND cash the Phillies have been demanding.
Of course, if Philadelphia believes they can re-tool their roster and compete in 2014 then trading Lee makes little sense, especially if they can’t secure a package they’re happy with.
