PJ Hairston suspended indefinitely by UNC

In a move that frankly surprised no one, the University of North Carolina suspended swingman PJ Hairston indefinitely from their basketball team on Monday. The move came as a result of traffic stop that saw Hairston driving a reported 93 miles per hour in a 65 MPH zone while operating his girlfriend’s car late Sunday night.

This was far from the first transgression for Hairston, as he has at least two issues surrounding a rental car in the last month or so, and the heat was already mounting around the Tar Heels star. The previous issues would explain the swiftness of the dismissal (he was suspended just hours following the traffic incident), but there doesn’t seem to be a read on his future availability.

The fact that he wasn’t fully kicked off the team is probably an indication of the team’s need for his services. Hairston averaged nearly 15 points per game as a sophomore in 2012-2013, and he is the only returning player on the UNC roster who is a real threat to stretch opposing defenses from the wing position.

The jury is still out (both literally and figuratively) on Hairston’s status with the program, but for now, they seem content to move on to the 2013-2014 campaign without him.
