The San Diego Padres have made a move ahead of the trade deadline, adding right handed pitcher Ian Kennedy from the Arizona Diamondbacks. The trade is being reported by Corey Brock of MLB.com:

The Diamondbacks get left-handed reliever Joe Thatcher and right handed prospect Matt Stites and a compensation round B draft pick. The Padres have been searching for a starting pitcher and the Diamondbacks have been looking for a reliever so both teams fill needs.

Kennedy has had less than a stellar season. He is 3-8 through 21 starts this season. He has a 5.23 ERA through 124 innings pitched. He has struck out 108 batters and has walked 48.

He does go from a team that was 3.5 games out of first place in the NL West to a team 2.5 games out of dead last in that same division. The Padres are only 5 games behind Arizona and within reach of the Dodgers at only 8.5 games back. Stranger things have happened.
