The Arizona Diamondbacks have been one of the hottest teams in baseball, and they’re suddenly just 4.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the National League.
But it’s not about to get any easier as the final stretch of the season approaches, as the Diamondbacks placed catcher Miguel Montero on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. Montero had missed four games last week with the same back injury before returning to the lineup over the past weekend.
Montero has dealt with the issue for a while now and will now get some extended rest. Wil Nieves, who is hitting .354 in 37 games this year, will handle the load behind the plate during his absence. Catcher Tuffy Gosewisch has also been recalled from Triple-A Reno. Montero is hitting .228 with nine homers and 34 RBI this season.
The Texas Rangers just beat the Diamondbacks 7-1 in a makeup game, dropping Arizona to 55-53 overall. The Diamondbacks scored their only run in the ninth inning on outfielder Martin Prado’s RBI single.
