Nick Saban downplays preseason ranking

USA Today released the pre-season coaches poll, and shockingly the Nick Saban led Alabama Crimson Tide are sitting atop the chart after winning their 3rd National Title in 4 years. While honored by the high preseason ranking, Saban is down playing the significance.

“We appreciate the recognition, but preseason polls don’t determine who the best teams will be,” Alabama coach Nick Saban told USA TODAY Sports. “We aren’t entitled to anything, and this team’s achievements will be based on what they create with the quality of their play and consistency in performance.”

It’ll be a rough road ahead for Alabama, or any SEC team to make it through unscathed. They have 6 teams ranked in the top 13: Florida, Texas A&M (with Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Johnny Manziel), South Carolina (and Heisman Candidate pass rusher Jadeveon Clowney), Georgia, and LSU.

This could be the year that the SEC beats itself up so bad they get forced out of the BCS National Championship game picture. Of course there have been years past where we thought that would happen. For instance after the 2011 season when a one loss #2 Alabama leap-frogged other one loss teams to replay LSU, who had beaten Alabama earlier, for the National Championship.

Well he must mean it since he was the only coach in the poll who voted Alabama third behind Ohio State and Texas AM first. Every other coach voted Alabama first (58) and three voted them second. But I think deep down he knows this should be his best team ever and any loss would be a great disappointment to him. Nevertheless anyone can lose and Alabama is the biggest target out there.
