New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is in his first year as the team’s defensive coordinator and there is one player that will be in his first year with the team, as well, and Ryan could not be happier. Cornerback Keenan Lewis was signed during free agency and Ryan is excited to get their newest defender to work.

In fact, Ryan believes that Lewis was the best defender available on the open market.

I’m so excited about Keenan Lewis — everything about him since the day we signed him,” Ryan said, via the Times-Picayune. “He’s got so much ability. The sky is the limit for this guy. He’s going to be fantastic for us. We’re so excited about him. He’s smart, he’s tough, he’s long. And he’s a local hero. You’ve got to love this guy. In my opinion, I honestly feel we got the best free agent out there on defense.”

It is great to see Ryan’s confidence in his player and it could go a long way if Lewis’ defensive coordinator makes him more confident in his own skill set.

Lewis was very solid during his time with the Pittsburgh Steelers, so the Saints are hoping that they can get a boost in their secondary as they look to change the defense around and climb up the NFC South ladder.
