Cody Ross says Red Sox GM Cherington “lied to my face”

Jul 21, 2013; San Francisco, CA, USA; Arizona Diamondbacks left fielder Cody Ross (7) connects for a single that drove in 2 runs during the eight inning in a game against the San Francisco Giants at AT

It’s a little too late in the season to be bringing this up, but I guess if it bothers a player this much, of course it will get media attention.

How, owners, mangers, general managers have always said things they never lived up too, some players shake it off, most take it personal.

According to Cody Ross, general manager Ben Cherington told him that they didn’t want to sign guys to long term deals.

“They told me they didn’t want to sign guys to long-term deals and they gave Shane Victorino a 3 year deal and then Mike Napoli a 3 year deal or 4 year deal, whatever it was. So basically they lied to my face. At that point, I kind of got a bad taste in my mouth and wanted to move on and that was it.” Ross said in an interview with WEEI.com

My guess would be that Ben Cherington had no intentions of signing Cody Ross to a long term deal. It’s not really a good look to air something like this to the local media, especially when you are returning to that city, playing against your former team in a weekend series.

Look, I loved watching Cody Ross and wish him the best, but Cody, this means the Red Sox were moving on as well.
