Dale Earnhardt Jr. finished fifth in the GoBowling.com 400 at Pocono on Sunday, a result indicative of his 2013 season. Earnhardt Jr. hasn’t won a race this year but has still managed to remain in the top seven of the Sprint Cup point standings thanks to consistent high finishes (he’s placed in the top five five separate times).
Earnhardt Jr. spoke after the race about the frustration of being constantly on the cusp of the winner’s circle:
We’re missing that little bit. We keep showing up with a fifth-place car. I’m just waiting on that dang day where you’re the guy and you have the best car. But it’s going to be hard as long as Jimmie (Johnson, points leader) and Kasey (Kahne, Sunday’s winner) run like they do. They always have good speed.
They’re the fastest guys out there every week. Fortunately for us, we know what they’re doing and can learn from them. We can take advantage of that and try to improve what we’re doing and get ourselves in victory lane. We’re a good, competitive team. We just have to do everything right one weekend, and it should work out. (USA Today Sports)
In an interesting twist, two of Earnhardt Jr.’s teammates for Hendrick Motorsports, Kasey Kahne and Jeff Gordon, finished ahead of Earnhardt Jr. on Sunday.
