UFC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz has been out of action for the past two years and while he is still waiting to get cleared by the doctors, he has set his own goal of an early 2014 return.
“I’m just setting personal goals to be back,” Cruz said, via MMAjunkie.com. “I’m looking to be back the beginning of next year is what it’s looking like from what the doctors have told me, to that’s my goal. Unfortunately, the doctor hasn’t even released me, so I couldn’t even make a date if I wanted to.
“It’s like when you got knocked out and you get put on suspension. It’s the same type of deal with this injury. There’s a set time and stipulation with a knee injury that I’ve gone through, especially doubled. So I’m just listening to the doctor so I stay back and don’t just come back.”
Cruz has been dealing with multiple ACL surgeries throughout his 22 month absence.
In the meantime, the UFC has an interim title to keep the action in the promotion’s bantamweight division moving.
Brazil’s Renan Barao is the current interim champion and he is set to defend the belt at UFC 165 as the co-main event, while Jon Jones and Alexander Gustafsson face off in the main event of the night.
