Brigham Young head coach Bronco Mendenhall made a big statement to his team when they got to their lockers for fall practice. Instead of having their names on the back of the jerseys like the team was so used to having in the past, Mendenhall swapped out the names for buzzwords that will remind players of why they chose BYU — honor, spirit and tradition.

This is not a change that is just taking place for one game or one year. Instead, Mendenhall says these words will remain on the back of the uniforms for as long as he is head coach at the university.

Jay Drew of the Salt Lake Tribune confirmed that these words will remain on the backs of the players.

It is a bit of a gimmick for BYU, but let’s all be thankful that Mendenhall didn’t go too far. If he really wanted to get some attention, he could have put a hashtag before each word on the back of the jerseys.
