It wasn’t a complete game shutout from “King Felix”, but the Seattle Mariners’ ace was utterly dominant in putting the Milwaukee Brewers away in a 2-0 victory.

Felix Hernandez pitched 8 shutout innings, allowing only 4 hits and 1 walk while striking out 8 Brewers, and his performance took so much out of him that he even asked out of the game. Hernandez was quoted post-game as saying, “I’m just being honest. I don’t want to go out there tired, and lose the game,” but even a tiring Hernandez seemed to cruise through the paltry Milwaukee lineup.

Only Juan Francisco (who doubled) made significant contact off of Hernandez during the game, and the 2 runs that Seattle’s offense produced were more than enough. The surging Justin Smoak smacked his 13th home run of the season, and Dustin Ackley scored the 2nd run after a double and a wild pitch. However, the story of the day was certainly the performance of Hernandez.

While the “win” column for Hernandez isn’t always stellar because of the lack of team success, Sunday’s win was his 12th of the season, and he has been one of the lone bright spots for the 2013 edition of the Mariners. His 2.28 ERA leads the American League, and with no signs of slowing down, it looks to be another Cy Young-contending season for Hernandez.
