The New York Jets received a minor scare during Friday’s preseason opener when rookie quarterback Geno Smith rolled his ankle and limped to the sideline. The good news was that Smith’s injury didn’t appear to be too serious, but you can never be 100 percent confident until you see how the player responds.

Luckily for the Jets, Smith responded well.

Despite limping off the field and leaving the game early, Smith was able to return to the practice field on Sunday without missing any time.

The next question for the team will be to decide whether Smith or veteran Mark Sanchez, who started the preseason opener by throwing a pick-six before rebounding for a solid performance, will take the first-team reps under center when the team returns to action against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Smith was believed to have been closing the ground on Sanchez in the race for the starting quarterback job, but he struggled in the first preseason game before the ankle injury.

It will be interesting if that is all it will take for Sanchez to get a firm grip on the job and enter the season as the team’s starter.
