Dale Earnhardt Jr. has only won two races since 2007, and hasn’t won over a year, but he feels confident in his abilities. He believes that a victory at a future race is imminent, and has an extra sense of confidence. Normally, you wouldn’t feel confident for the future just one day after finishing 30th at Watkins Glen, but then again, you aren’t Dale Earnhardt Jr.
What’s interesting is that the next race on the schedule is at Michigan, the track where Earnhardt Jr. has won his last two races (2008, 2012). He definitely likes the track, and said this in an interview with ESPN,
We’re working real hard, it could come any weekend. We’re going to Michigan this weekend and feel like it’s a place we can succeed at.
We just anticipate it happening any week and go in every week with the attitude that we can be competitive and win the race, and we’ve been pretty strong all season, so the confidence is high.
After his poor performance at Watkins Glen, the number 88 car has dropped to the sixth spot in the standings in the Chase for the Cup. The top 10 ranked drivers after the race on September 7th at Richmond will qualify for the Chase, as well as the two highest ranked wild card drivers. So there is plenty of wiggle room for Earnhardt Jr. as we approach the next race this Sunday at Michigan.
