The Florida Gators have a lot of production to replace with the graduation of Mike Gilleslie, and projected starting running back Matt Jones is now out indefinitely and could miss the first two games of the season due to a mysterious illness.
Gators Head Coach Will Muschamp had been optimistic about Jones’ recovery from a viral infection, but now says it “may be a reality” that Jones could miss the first two games of the season.
“We’re a little bit in uncharted waters, having the type of infection he had and then you’re talking about the heat we’re in and that sort of thing,” Muschamp said. “I think we need to be really careful right now that we don’t have a relapse of the situation.”
Jones suffered the illness about two weeks before preseason camp began, and it was called just a typical a viral infection. Jones has improved and is slowly working on getting back into football playing shape. However, he lost weight while fighting the infection and is far from ready to take bruising hits on the football field.
