The Oakland Athletics have a enthusiastic pitcher in Grant Balfour. The problem with enthusiasm is that it isn’t only for when things are going well.
The relief pitcher was on the mound during the 8th of a game (from Saturday August, 10th) where the Toronto Blue Jays were leading the A’s 5-3. Adam Lind was at the plate for the Blue Jays with 1 out. Balfour’s first pitch was a little high and was called a ball.
That led to Balfour to release a loud “f—” that was picked up by a mic somewhere in the park. The announcers calling the game can’t do anything but chuckle.
“Better turn that microphone off, Grant’s pitching,” says one announcer.
That little out burst could’ve been what Balfour needed. He wound up striking Lind out and threw a perfect 8th inning. It was a lost cause however in what turned out to be a 5-4 loss for the Athletics.
The A’s have gone 4-6 over the last 10 games and lost first place in the division to the surging Rangers who are 9-1 over the same stretch.
