Reports out of Pittsburgh on Wednesday reveal that journeyman quarterback Tom Savage (no relation to Dan, Doc, or Michael) will be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Panthers in 2013. Savage started his NCAA career at Rutgers — he threw for 2,211 yards and 14 touchdowns as a true freshman in 2009 — before transferring to Arizona and then to Pitt. Due to injury and regulations regarding transferring, he hasn’t played since that freshman season.
Head coach Paul Chryst spoke to reporters about his decision to anoint Savage as the starter:
Tom is going to be our starting quarterback. We like what he’s done to this point. It’s a reflection of where Tom’s at. I still think Chad is making really good progress, but I feel really good and confident with Tom and certainly like the direction Chad is going. (ESPN)
Savage himself also chimed in, saying that he “can become complacent” now that he’s won the starting gig.
Savage will be tested right off the bat. The Panthers open the 2013 season against the Florida State Seminoles on September 2nd.
