Mike Leach, head coach of the Washington State Cougars, isn’t exactly known as the friendliest and gentlest of guys. Yet the air-raid maven didn’t hesitate to compliment Gus Malzahn, the new head coach of the Auburn Tigers. (The two teams will meet on August 31st.)
Here’s what Leach had to say about Malzahn and the Tigers:
He’s not that new of a head coach. Keep in mind that Auburn won the national championship not too long ago (2011) and have a pile of recruiting classes that teams that win national championships get because they demand attention. And of course Gus was there when all that went on, so it was more like he took a sabbatical than he is totally a new head coach because obviously he had a hand in recruiting some of those guys, too. I think they’re going to get it put together pretty good and pretty quickly, and they certainly have the players to do it. (AL.com)
After the horrible and disgraceful 2012 season, Auburn fans must certainly be anxious to see if Malzahn can turn things around. Cougar fans are also hoping to see if Leach can build upon his team’s Apple Cup upset and improve his 3-9 record from last year.
