Less than 40 days after beginning their partnership, the coach/player relationship between Jimmy Conners and Maria Sharapova is reportedly over.
According to various reports, Sharapova ended the relationship with Conners following a bad loss to Sloane Stephens on Wednesday in Cincinnati. It seems almost comedic to see something like this happen between player and coach, but Sharapova’s track record doesn’t exactly suggest stability in this area.
In addition, Conners, the former men’s tennis great, had only coached one high-level player in his post-playing days, and Andy Roddick doesn’t seem shocked by the proceedings. Roddick tweeted this after the “divorce” was made public:
Who took the under on a match and a half for Connors/Sharapova ?? If you did, congrats on your newfound wealth …. You smell terrific

It remains to be seen whether Maria Sharapova can regain her previous form as one of the best tennis players in the world. However, she’ll have to do it with a new coach, and with the US Open just around the corner in New York, this doesn’t seem like an ideal time to be doing an open recruitment of such a position.
The 26-year-old Sharapova will have played just one hard-court match as a tune-up for Flushing Meadows, and that likely spells disaster when she arrives.
