UFC light heavyweights Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Chael Sonnen headline tonight’s UFC Fight Night 26 event during the launch of America’s new 24/7 sports network FOX Sports 1. The event will be available in more than 90 million homes, but there is one man in particular who will be paying close attention to the bout — Wanderlei Silva.
Silva and Shogun are good friends and they have not been pleased with the comments that Sonnen has made about Brazilian fighters in the past.
As far as Silva is concerned, Shogun should be the clear favorite, despite what the betting odds say, and he expects his friend to annihilate Sonnen in their main event match up.
“This is a joke – he’s a clown,” Silva said of Sonnen, via MMAjunkie.com. “He’s a second-level fighter. He’s not Top 10 – he’s not a top fighter. He can’t say anything about that because he’s not in the position. His results don’t give him the right to talk like that.
“Shogun can beat him anywhere. In the standup or on the ground – he can submit and he can knock out,” Silva said. “I don’t see any chance for Sonnen in that fight. I don’t gamble, but I talked to my wife. I want to put $100,000 on Shogun.
“Shogun is going to hurt him. I think it’s maybe going to be Sonnen’s last fight. He’s not going to fight after that fight anymore.”
While Silva thinks Shogun can beat Sonnen in to retirement, he is still hoping for a bout with Sonnen down the road. It is also a fight that Sonnen has said he would love to take and he has even been pushing for it, but the Brazilian believes he could do some serious damage to the man who has had nothing but bad things to say about him in the past.
“When I fight with him, it’s going to be a great fight, it’s going to be a good match,” Silva said. “But when I fight with him, he’s going to know what’s going to happen.
“I’m not going to just fight. I’m going to hurt him.”
Sonnen is one of those fighters that always pushes forward, so if he is able to get past the always aggressive Shogun, a fight with Wanderlei would surely be exciting.
