The New York Jets quarterback competition took a different turn this weekend. Mark Sanchez played while Geno Smith sat with an ankle injury. That might have some thinking that Sanchez is ahead in the quarterback competition.

“I was told the competition is still open,” Smith said, via ESPNNewYork.com.

Head coach Rex Ryan echoed those statements saying that the competition would continue this week. Smith has been practicing despite having an ankle injury and Ryan called the practice “brutal.”

“I wanted to be out there in practice,” Smith said. “I wouldn’t allow them to keep me out of practice.”

Ryan had initially wanted to name a starter by the third preseason game but is going to have to extend that due to the injury to Smith. If Smith can’t get healthier and improve this week from his “brutal” performance last week, it could be over.

Fortunately for Smith, he says his ankle is “as close to 100 percent as it’s been this week.”

“Any chance I get to complete, I’m going to take full advantage of it,” Smith said.
