Well, that’s a new one.
Speaking to the Sun Sentenial, Miami Heat president Pat Riley said he wants to ‘cannibalize’ the free agent market in August and September, essentially stating that he feels the Heat can pick up multiple key free agent acquisitions thanks to their title aspirations.
Per Ira Winderman:
Q: Why not Antawn Jamison? He signed for the minimum with the Lakers last year and he gave them good help off the bench. He’s a veteran, can spread the floor, played with LeBron James in Cleveland, is a good locker-room presence, and wants to win a championship. — Joey, Los Angeles.
A: And is just the type of player Pat Riley spoke about when he said the Heat could cannibalize the free-agent market in August and September, when true bargains come available. Even at this late stage of free agency, among those unsigned are Jamison, Lamar Odom, Stephen Jackson, DeShawn Stevenson, Richard Hamilton, Dahntay Jones, Ronnie Brewer, Daniel Gibson, Tyrus Thomas, Roger Mason Jr., Sebastian Telfair, Vladimir Radmanovic and Marquis Daniels. There is still plenty of value to be had . . . if the Heat truly plan to carry more than the minimum of 13 players.
