The Green Bay Packers have been concerned with their current backup quarterback situation, but with the preseason in to the full swing of things, they have seen some positive results as their backup signal-callers continue to improve.

The performance has still been less than ideal, but the marked improvement has not gone unnoticed and Graham Harrell is one of the quarterbacks that is increasingly positive in his evaluations.

We did some good things,” Harrell said, via ESPNWisconsin.com.  “We moved the ball all three drives, we did some good things, but we’ve got to finish the drives.  I think we improved definitely as a unit and put some points on the board.  We just had some costly mistakes end some drives and that’s the way it goes sometimes.  Overall, I think we improved and did some good things. We just have to work on finishing drives.”

Head coach Mike McCarthy will have to decide who will be the primary backup for the team this season, and recently signed Vince Young and B.J. Coleman are the players that will challenge Harrell.

“This is the time that the individual that’s going to be the guy in that particular position or personnel grouping, they need to jump forward,” said McCarthy.  ”It’s time for guys to jump forward.  This is what usually happens in the second preseason week or the third preseason week, and that’s what you look for.”

With the preseason winding down, McCarthy will need to decide who the backup should be.

It is more important than ever in today’s NFL that you have a reliable backup in case your star goes down, especially for the Packers who rely so heavily on the position.

After two preseason games, the one player that has stood out is Coleman. It will be interesting to see who wins the job.
