6-foot-10 John Isner has been tearing up the tennis courts recently, upsetting No. 1 ranked Novak Djokovic in the Western and Southern Open and playing a close final against Rafael Nadal. The budding star was surprised, though, open learning that he is the highest ranked American player for the upcoming U.S. Open.

Said Isner:

I never felt like I was a guy who was going to carry American tennis at all. The fact that I ever even made it to the top ranked American is a huge surprise for me, and I feel very proud that I can say that.

I’m just worried about myself and trying to play this sport as long as I can, because I realize I’m in a very fortunate position to do what I do. So I want to do it as long as possible (Reuters).

The U.S. Open will run from Aug. 26 through Sept. 9. The New York location bodes well for Isner; 14 of his 16 ATP tour final appearances have come on U.S. soil.
