Los Angeles Angels shut down Albert Pujols for rest of season

There was some hope that injured slugger Albert Pujols would return for the final month of the season, but the Los Angeles Angels who are essentially out of playoff contention have decided to shut down their prized hitter for the rest of the year.

Per Alden Gonzalez:

Albert Pujols officially shut down for season.

Pujols, who has dealt with on again, off again foot injuries since 2003 had been playing injured for much of the season before suffering a partial tear of his left plantar fascia. Pujols was weighing his options about going through with offseason surgery to correct the issue but the tear essentially did the same procedure surgery would have done.

Now, with little to play for and Pujols still relatively injured, there’s no reason to bring the former MVP back into the fold.

With a few extra months of recovery time now, the Angels are hopeful Pujols will be able to rest during the offseason and return to form in 2014.
