Honestly, the only purpose of the preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll is to stir up pointless debates amongst fans. I mean, it’s sort of hard to truly assess where a team should be ranked without having actually seen them suit-up for a single game (unless you’re clairvoyant or something). That said…
Who in their right mind thinks the Georgia Bulldogs are better than the Alabama Crimson Tide?!
When the AP poll was first released the other week, there was a lone vote giving Georgia the number one spot over two-time defending champion Alabama. The vote was evidently submitted by Glen Guilbeau, who explained his decision to AJC.com’s Chip Towers:
Georgia easily could have won it all last year and they return most of their offense and (Aaron) Murray from that team. And I think it’s good that they don’t return that defense. Sometimes it’s better when you don’t return players from a bad unit, you know? So I think that’s a good thing, too. And I just think it might be their turn. I think that’s what happens; sometimes it’s just a team’s turn.
While it’s undeniable that last year’s SEC championship game was a classic and that Georgia demonstrated they could go toe-to-toe with ‘Bama, I think you still have to give the nod to the defending champs. But hey, I’m just happy Oregon State cracked the the list at all.
