Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban announced defensive back Geno Smith has been suspended for the season opener on Tuesday.
Smith, a 6-0, 186 lb. sophomore, was arrested for driving under the influence early Sunday morning. His bond was set at $1,000 and he was released later Sunday evening.
Smith appeared in 13 games for the Tide last season, even earning two starts as a true freshman. He had nine tackles and two pass breakups.
According to Andrew Gribble of AL.com, Saban told reporters Smith also has some things to take care of “in house.” Smith was at practice on Tuesday, but looked on from the sideline as he was replaced by Jarrick Williams at his normal “Star” position with both the first and second team nickle defenses.
Williams, a 6-1, 210 lb. redshirt junior, earned a medical redshirt in 2012 after injuring his knee just over a year ago. He has played in 11 career games.
The top-ranked Tide open their season in the Chick Fil-A Kickoff game in Atlanta, Georgia against the Virginia Tech Hokies on Saturday, August 31 at 5:30 pm EST.
