Starting quarterback competitions around the NFL are coming to an end. Most notably the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to name Michael Vick, not so surprisingly their starter, for the 2013 season instead of Nick Foles. Vick maintained that he had earned the job and that it was not given to him.

“I had to come back and work for everything,” Vick said, via the Philadelphia Inquirer. “It wasn’t given to me.”

The Eagles will hold onto Foles as an insurance policy incase Vick gets injured and not trade him. Vick however wants to hold onto that edge that he got in the competition.

“There’s a lot of comparisons you can make,” Vick said. “You’re at your best when the best is required. Sometimes, it’s hard to get it out of yourself. Sometimes, you need to be motivated, you need to be pushed.”

Head coach Chip Kelly hinted that Vick will be on a long leash.

“I can be in this very same position again,” Vick said.

Vick has also said that his love of the game has been restored.

“I felt a sense of guilt for a lot of things that took place,” Vick said. “And I guess I allowed my emotions to get the most out of me at times the past couple years.”

Wide receiver DeSean Jackson was thrilled with the news.

“Since day one, I honestly thought he’d fit this offense the best,” Jackson said. “He’s able to go out there, still use his feet, and still throw the ball 80 yards downfield.”
