Real Madrid received some bad news regarding Spanish midfielder Xabi Alonso. Alonso will be out for three months after learning that he broke his fifth metatarsal in Wednesday’s training session.

The club confirmed the news with a press release on their official website. Here is a rough translation of their statement:

The Real Madrid player Xabi Alonso has suffered today a fracture of the fifth metatarsal of his right foot as radiological tests have revealed to which has been submitted by Real Madrid Sanitas medical services.

This delivers a big blow to Madrid’s depth in the midfield, but the Spanish powerhouse should be able to fight through his absence, especially if Asier Illarramendi can step up in Alonso’s absence.

Alonso had missed the Confederations Cup while he was recovering from surgery to repair his pubalgia (sports hernia). He was still recovering from that injury when news of the broken fifth metatarsal came down.

Casemiro, Modric and Isco are currently the only midfielders on Real Madrid’s roster, but they should receive some good news soon with the return of Khedira and Illarramendi.
