According to FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, the Colorado Rockies have placed right handed closer Rafael Betancourt on waivers.
Betancourt carries a $4.25 million option for the 2014 season so the Rockies probably won’t move the closer unless they get something in return. Contenders who are in need of late inning pitching could put their claims on on the veteran closer.
His ERA on the season stands at 3.54 with a 1.25 WHIP and 27/11 K/BB ratio in 28 innings this season. Around four days ago, the Rockies activated the right hander from the 15 day disabled list. The 38 year old closer was placed on the disabled list on July 20th with appendicities.
He has converted 15 of 16 save opportunities and carries a win/loss of 2-3. Teams like the Boston Red Sox, Cleveland Indians, Texas Rangers, St. Louis Cardinals and Tampa Bay Rays are teams who are looking to make it deep into the playoffs, could place a claim and make a deal with the Rockies to acquire Betancourt.
Sources: #Rockies’ Betancourt on waivers. Team holds $4.25M option on him for ’14, plans to bring him back. So, offer would need to be good.
