Thursday afternoon a report surfaced that the New York Jets quarterback battle could very well come down to the final preseason game.

Before the preseason began, several signs pointed to the Jets counting on Smith becoming the starting quarterback in his rookie season. However, Smith injured his ankle in the first preseason game and wasn’t able to play against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday.

In Smith’s absence, incumbent starter Mark Sanchez was 13-of-23 for 169 yards with a touchdown and an interception.

In the Jets first preseason game, a 26-17 loss to the Detroit Lions, Sanchez was 10-of-13 for 125 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Before injuring his ankle, Smith was 6-of-7 for 47 yards.

The injury to Smith and Sanchez’s experience make him the apparent leader, but the Jets are certainly going to give Smith every opportunity to win the job. In fact, Manish Mehta reported Smith would start Saturday’s preseason game against the New York Giants Tuesday.

Head coach Rex Ryan confirmed Smith would be starting quarterback Saturday.

Kickoff between the Giants and Jets Saturday night is set for 7:00 pm EST.
