The SMU Mustangs are looking in to a backstage visit at a Lil Wayne concert that included Deion Sanders Jr. and a few of his SMU teammates. Photos of the backstage visit surfaced around the web and it caught the attention of the NCAA who wants to determine whether or not the players were given preferential treatment because they were SMU players.
Sanders’ father, NFL Hall of Famer Deion Sanders, told Adam Lawson of the Valley Morning Star that Lil Wayne is one of his best friends.
While Sanders may say that it is the NCAA looking in to his son, SMU disagrees and says that they are the ones leading the probe.
“It’s not the NCAA. It’s our compliance office. Just doing their due diligence,” SMU official Brad Sutton said. “We don’t expect to find anything amiss, but it’s our responsibility to check stuff like this out.”
Sanders Jr. joined SMU this year after a year at prep school in Atlanta. You can expect him to see time this season as a slot wide receiver for the Mustangs.
