The Arizona Diamondbacks have placed right handed relief pitcher J.J. Putz on the 15-day disabled list today.

Putz dislocated his pinky after a ball that was hit by Kevin Frandsen ricocheted off of his hand and ended up bouncing towards shortstop Cliff Pennington who threw to first and retired Frandsen. There was said to be a small laceration on his pinky also, reported on Twitter by Nick Piecoro.

The 36 year old relief pitcher was on the disabled list this season for 46 games with a sprained UCL, a strained flexor pronator muscle and ulnar neuritis. It hasn’t been the greatest season health wise for Putz but he has still managed to pitch well for the Diamondbacks.

His ERA stands at 2.51 in 28.2 innings of work this season. Hard throwing big man Heath Bell and Joe Thatcher will be used in setup roles in his absence.

With Putz heading to the disabled list, the D’Backs have recalled right handed pitcher Chaz Roe from Triple-A Reno. Roe will obviosuly take Putz’s roster spot and will provide the team with depth in the bullpen.

The 26 year old right handed pitcher has a 5.40 ERA over five appearances with the major league club this season.
