Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams show mutual respect heading into U.S. Open

Victoria Azarenka and Serena Williams had an incredible final match at the Western and Southern Open the other week, with Williams losing in a third-set tiebreaker to give Azarenka the win in Cincinnati. With the U.S. Open just around the corner, the two tennis stars discussed the amount of respect and admiration they have towards each other.

Here’s Azarenka on the top-seeded Williams:

Every time we play, I face a big challenge, my biggest opponent. Playing in the final of any tournament against the best player, that’s what you really strive for and to overcome and beat. I’ve had tough losses before against her but I feel like I learned from those losses, and it helps me improve (Reuters).

And here’s Williams complimenting Azarenka’s competitiveness and personality: “I’m a big Victoria fan. I think she’s just the ultimate competitor on the court and just really nice. I really get along with her. She’s just a great person.”

Hopefully the two will meet again in the final of the U.S. Open like they did in 2012. Williams won easily 7-5, but things may be a bit closer this time around considering how well Azarenka is playing.
