USC Trojans wide receiver Marqise Lee joked last week about Lane Kiffin’s reluctance to name a starting quarterback. With the opening game of the season (against Hawaii) just a few days away, Kiffin has finally made his decision…both Max Wittek and Cody Kessler will play! Compromise! Ice cream for everyone!
Wittek, of course, filled in for Matt Barkley at the end of the 2012 season, but Kessler has played well enough during training camp to render Kiffin ambivalent.
Looking at the early season schedule for the Trojans, Kiffin’s plan makes sense. USC has a fairly easy run of September games — at Hawaii, home against Washington State, home against Boston College, and home against Utah State — before they will be truly tested (don’t sleep on the Arizona State Sun Devils, whom the the Trojans play in Tempe on Sept. 28). However, not reaching a decision early can have its consequences. Just ask any Oregon State fan how much they liked the Sean Mannion/Cody Vaz rotation last season, and they’ll likely respond with a whimper of frustration.
What do you think, USC fans? Are you ticked with Kiffin taking his sweet time? Are you okay with not having a set starter at this stage? Sound off in the comments below.
