Now this may come as a shock to some of you — sit down, brace yourselves, hit your inhaler, etc. — but Jadeveon Clowney is the face of the South Carolina Gamecocks. He’s so popular that restaurants are illegally using his name to market sandwiches (that’s how you know you’ve made it). However, one man does not a football team make, and defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles wants you all to know that the Gamecocks have other talented players besides Mr. Sled Flipper.
Quarles spoke about the team’s defense to ESPN’s Chris Low:
A lot of people around the country know about Jadeveon Clowney, but they’re going to find out that there’s a lot more to our defensive line this season than just one guy.
One play, it may be Clowney. The next, it may be me, J.T., Chaz or any of the other guys. They’re going to have a lot more to worry about than just No. 7.
It’ll be interesting to see if Quarles, Chaz Sutton, and J.T. Surratt can emerge out of Clowney’s immense shadow. But really, given the amount of hype Clowney has received since his hit on Vincent Smith, it’s unlikely that any of those three will steal his thunder. However, hype and media attention and commercials don’t matter to opposing quarterbacks being throttled in the backfield — pain is nameless.
