English Premier League side Chelsea have signed Cameroon striker Samuel Eto’o on a free transfer from Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala. Yes, that’s right… a free transfer.
Eto’o is 32 years old and will join Chelsea with a one-year-deal. Eto’o is Chelsea’s back up plan after failed bids to land Manchester United star Wayne Rooney. It isn’t the only star Chelsea has grabbed from Anzhi this summer.
Anzhi have also sold Brazil winger Willian, 25, to the 2012 UEFA Champions League winners.
New Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has some experience with Eto’o, he was on Mourinho’s Inter Milan squad that won the Champions League in 2010. When he went to Anzhi in 2011, billionaire owner Suleyman Kerimov made him the highest-paid player in the world.
Eto’o started his career at Real Madrid but eventually wound up at Barcelona and Camp Nou. He won two Champions League titles there scoring in both finals (2006 and 2009). Eto’o has been named African Footballer of the Year four different times and lead Cameroon to a African Nations Cup in 2002.
Chelsea could just be looking for a place holder till the next transfer window.
