The New York Jets have just over a week to announce their starting quarterback for the season-opener, but there is still no urgency from the coaching staff to announce who will be the man to lead the team’s offense out on to the field.

It is unlikely that veteran Mark Sanchez suit up for Week One as he recovers from his shoulder injury, so the most likely options are Matt Simms and first-round pick Geno Smith.

Jets fans are dying to know who their team’s starter will be, but head coach Rex Ryan says that they will continue to take their time.

“When we feel good about it we’ll make that decision and we’ll see. But certainly we haven’t put a timetable on it, as far as naming a starting quarterback, but when we feel good about the decision as an organization, then we’ll make that decision,” Ryan said, via Pro Football Talk.

With Sanchez’s injury, you would have to expect that Smith starts by elimination. If the team is going to go with an unproven signal-caller, they would be wise to march their first-round pick out on to the field for Day 1, despite his obvious struggles throughout the preseason.
