Welcome to college, freshman! Now go run out on the football field and win us the game! No pressure!

Due to a back injury suffered by Michael Brewer, true freshman walk-on Baker Mayfield will be the starting quarterback for the Texas Tech Red Raiders during tonight’s game against Southern Methodist. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Mayfield only received two FBS scholarship offers coming out of Lake Travis High School — from the Florida Atlantic Owls and the New Mexico Lobos — despite putting up big numbers, having thrown for 6,255 yards and 67 touchdowns while leading his team to a 25-2 record during his time as a starter. (Interestingly, the quarterback for the SMU Mustangs, Garrett Gilbert, is also a graduate of Lake Travis. Small world! Maybe they’ll exchange yearbooks afterwards.)

Mayfield’s high school coach, Hank Cater, spoke to ESPN last week about the tenacious walk-on: “Baker is a player. Such a smart and tough competitor. That would be the thing I’d say about Baker. He welcomes the underdog role and he always has.”

We’ll all be rooting for you tonight, Mayfield. Just don’t buy an elevator pass from anyone!
