Defending NCAA champion Alabama opened the season in grand fashion Saturday afternoon. On their first touch of the 2013 college football season, Alabama scored on a 72 yard punt return by Christion Jones.
Check out the return here:
Jones then returned a kickoff — following a Virgnia Tech field goal — 94 yards for a touchdown.
Not a bad way to open the season, eh?
Virginia Tech is still roughly in the ball game but it will take quite a bit for the Hokies to come back in this one against the preseason #1, with the score at 28-10 at halftime.
AJ McCarron was a question mark coming into the game with an ingrown toenail hindering him. He is 7-for-14 with 67 yards and an interception so far.
Virginia Tech has held Alabama to 30 yards rushing on 17 carries, but the Christion Jones show has helped the Crimson Tide pull away.
Tech running back Trey Edmunds leads all rushers with 106 yards on 10 carries, and scored the Hokies lone touchdown of the contest thus far on a 77 yard jaunt at the end of the first quarter.
Virginia Tech quarterback Logan Thomas is just 3-for-14 for 40 yards in the 1st half. The only real eye popping numbers in this one are the jones touchdown returns, as both defenses — as expected — are having good first halves.
