Boston Bruins GM gets four-year extension

The Boston Bruins have turned themselves into one a modern version of an NHL dynasty and the man responsible for that won’t be going anywhere anytime soon. The Boston Bruins have re-signed GM Peter Chiarelli to a four-year extension. The extensions will keep Chiarelli with the Bruins through 2017-2018 and will make him the teams Alternate Govener.

“Our challenges are now at a level that we compete for the Stanley Cup and we want to compete for the Stanley Cup every year.” ~ Peter Chiarelli

Chiarelli took over the Bruins in 2006 and since then they’ve made the playoffs 6 of the 7 seasons Chiarelli has been at the helm, including their Stanley Cup Championship in 2011. He’s done so well managing the Bruins, that he’s earned a spot on hockey Canada’s executive team alongside Steve Yzerman.

Possibly one of Chiarelli’s best moves was luring Jaromir Jagr away from the Pittsburgh Penguins last season to help the Bruins on their playoff run. The Penguins believed they had Jagr all locked up but at the last minute the Bruins came in and offered him an offer he couldn’t refuse.

In Chiarelli’s 7 season’s in Boston the team has gone 291-187-62, with a Stanley Cup championship and two trips to the Stanley Cup Finals. Chiarelli has turned the Bruins into a team that can contend for the Cup every season.

He’s done a fantastic job as a GM since he’s been here and certainly deserves the extension.” ~ Bruins president Cam Neely.
