Serena Williams advances to US Open quarters


In a tale of sweet revenge, Serena Williams avenged an earlier major loss to Sloane Stephens by beating her 6-4, 6-1. Serena wasn’t quite 100% in their previous meeting. And while people were obviously building up the “revenge” hype, Serena said she focused on her game and made sure she did everything right. It worked, although Stephens had a couple of missed opportunities. All in all, it was a good match. But, the reigning champ lives to…play another day.

Up next for Serena is 18th ranked Carla Suarez, who recently advanced after a more than 2 1/2 hours of playing time against Angelique Kerber.
