The Oklahoma State Cowboys entered their opener against the Mississippi State Bulldogs planning to utilize a duel-QB system, but they after J.W. Walsh showed he was clearly the superior QB during Saturday’s 21-3 victory, it looks as though he’ll be the Cowboys’ starter for at least the upcoming week.
Head coach Mike Gundy said today the sophomore would be the starter going forward and that senior Clint Chelf will not be rotated in at the position. Chelf originally got the start vs MSU, but was pulled in favor of Walsh after two ineffective possessions.
“J.W. is our quarterback now,” Gundy said. “Clint could play, but I don’t have a time frame for that and I’m not sure we ever will.”
Walsh came in and sparked the offense, primarily with his running ability, taking a QB-keeper 46 yards in the second- quarter to set up OSUs first touchdown. He finished the game with 125 yards rushing and 135 passing in a 21-3 victory.
Chelf finished last season as Oklahoma State’s starter following injuries to Walsh and Wes Lunt, who transferred to Illinois during the offseason.
